TAG | DVD copy-protection

I have talked about a type of special DVD copy protection scheme in a previous article; that is, pressing two marks on the DVD to make the DVD only read by DVD player but not by DVD writer. Today, I found some people were complaining some commercial DVDs not recognized by the computer DVD drive but seem not with that copy protection scheme.

The problem DVD movies are Taking of Pelham 123 (Sony Pictures video), Night at the Museum 2 (Twentieth Century Fox Film), Lionsgate’s W. (the George Bush bio pic). Following is the description of the problem:

“My DVD player can play the DVDs, while my computer DVD drive does not recognize them but it plays other commercial DVDs fine just not these. In the explorer, the drive shows empty with the DVD being in the drive, although it does try to read it when the DVD is inserted. DVD decrypting and ripping tool- DVDFab cannot detect the DVDs either.”

What makes people confused is that these DVDs can be played in the standalone DVD player but cannot be played in the computer DVD drive that play other DVDs just fine. Then what is going on in the DVD or DVD drive?

I have searched online for this problem but got nothing quite certain to solve it, so I’m not sure if this is another new DVD encryption method or it is the special copy protection scheme I referred to in the beginning. People complaining this problem didn’t mention they have found pressed marks on the discs, and I have no these DVDs in hand; otherwise, I will check the discs. Anyway, trying more DVD ripping tools is a feasible way.

What’s more probable is the problem of the DVD drive, so putting in another DVD drive can be the first try, since some DVD drives are more capable than others at reading discs. Also, check if the disc is scratched, though they are playable in DVD player and playback in DVD drive shouldn’t be picky with this.

Another possibility for the cause of this problem is the hard drive is changed to PIO mode from DMA mode. Normally, the computer HD is in DMA mode, but consecutive trying to read scratched or damaged discs will result in converting DMA to PIO mode, which will greatly slow the disc access. I found someone was looking for help to solve the problem of ripping the DVD of Surrogates movie which was released this year. His problem was that when he tried to rip the main movie with the latest version of DVDFab HD Decrypter, it missed the last five minutes and went directly to the credits.

Again, such problem is due to DVD ripper failing to decrypt the DVD. The DVD ripping program may read the DVD and rip most of the movie but something of the main movie will be missed. In fact, this type of encryption is better than DVD rippers totally failing to read the DVD or DVD showing huge file size. After all, just the a little part of the movie is missed.

However, if you have such an encrypted DVD and have a quick temper or brook no delay to rip the whole DVD, you can try a capable DVD ripping tool that is updated constantly and timely to cope with the latest copy protection scheme.

I saw someone was seeking help for the following problem in a forum:

“I ripped a DVD using DVD Decrypter to the hard drive but I got a surprising 60GB folder with 11 VOB files. I played one of the VOB and it showed a part of the movie several times.

When I clicked on the DVD-ROM drive to open the DVD, it showed pointless files, but Windows explorer showed the DVD size and number of files which were exactly the same with what the ripped DVD folder on the local hard drive showed. I know there is no a DVD in such large size as 60 GB but I don’t know where is wrong or how to extract the good parts from the files to make a normal DVD folder.”

Have you ever met such problem? Do you know what the matter is?

Well, I have met across such problem on a few DVDs.  When I put the DVD in the DVD-ROM,  the OS reported a huge file.  This type of copy-protecting scheme is made by putting 99 dummy tittles on the DVD and only one of the titles is the correct one of the movie. This is becoming popular at present since it’s effective to make many DVD rippers fail to decrypt the DVD.

Outdated DVD rippers like DVD decrypter which has not been developed for years are unable to decrypt the DVD with newer copy-protection. However, a DVD ripping tool that is constantly upgraded to keep pace with the development of the DVD encryption can easily rip a correct DVD folder from a DVD with latest DVD encrypting scheme. TouchUp DVD Ripper Platinum is exact such a program with much more features like converting DVD to whatever format, video editing when ripping and more. Have you ever ripped a commercial DVD and burn to a blank DVD to make a backup for yourself? If yes, what software did you use to do this work? I think most people use the free ripping tools like DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink and then burn with freeware like ImgBurn or other burning programs.

Recently, one of my friends turned to me for help, for he couldn’t play a burned DVD in the standalone DVD player. He ripped the usual VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS files to his hard drive with DVD Shrink and then burned the files to a blank DVD with ImgBurn in the option of “Write files/folders to disc”, but the burned DVD couldn’t play in his standalone DVD player, though the files could normally play in his PC. He was unable to figure out what was wrong.

Have you ever met such problem, when you are backing up you DVD?  Where was wrong in the whole operation in your opinion? Actually, where the shoe pitches is the ripping tool. Although the DVD files are created on your hard drive and you can play them in your PC, which seems you have ripped the DVD, it doesn’t mean the files have been ripped correctly and properly.

As we know, DVD ripping software like DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink haven’t been under development for years, while the DVD copy-protection technology are updated constantly. Thus the outdated DVD ripping software is unable to fully and correctly decrypt the newer commercial DVD. When you use the incorrectly ripped DVD files to burn, the burned DVD cannot play in your standalone DVD player. Therefore, you need to use a DVD ripping program competent to rip the latest copy-protected DVD so that you can burn playable DVDs swimmingly.

TouchUp DVD Ripper Platinum is such a tool to break the latest DVD copy protection with constant update. It can produce excellent output video and audio quality with super speed. To know its tons of features further, please check here.

Tip: Make sure the VIDEO_TS folder of the DVD you burned is in uppercase letters only; otherwise the standalone DVD players may not find the folder.
