There are different versions for the video codec Divx: Div3, 4 and 5. Div 3 is not much used nowadays but there are still some DVD released in this codec. Unfortunately, many DVD players do not support all the Divx versions and the LiteOn LVD-2001 DVD Player is one of such DVD players. LiteOn LVD-2001 has the feature of high quality DVD playback with support for many kinds of video format including Div 4 & 5. Thus if you have this player and want to enjoy your Div 3 movies on it, you need to convert the Div 3 to Div 5 or Xvid.

However, if a Divx 3 file is encoded with VBR(variable Bit Rate) audio, the audio will easily get gradually out of sync with the video when you re-encode it. Thus following are the guides to help you convert Divx 3 files that have VBR audios to Divx 5 or Xvid files and keep video and audio synchronizing, using the free video converter and editor.

Use Dr.Divx

Dr Divx is a free and open source software tool to convert your avi video encoded in Div 3 to Div 5 or Xvid codecs. It can automatically converts the VBR audio to CBR audio and then re-encode the video to Div 5 with fast 2-pass variable bit rate conversons. It also supports AC3 audio if you download and install an AC3 filter separately.

Note: Since Dr.Divx has not been updated for years, it only works with the 6.8.5 divx codec pack installed. It doesn’t support the latest version 6.9.x divx codec pack which is available now on the official Divx website.

Dr Divx

Tip: If you want better quality, you can adjust the settings by: advanced settings/ Pre-Processing tab /to use the max video resolution (eg using the slide bar); then use the codec tab to set the Rate Control bit rate to 1200Kbps. If you set higher than 1200kbps, the video may not pay fine in some devices.

Use VirtualDub

1.Load the file in VirtualDub that will tell you with a pop-up that the sound is VBR and will cause a skew (out of sync) in the playback.

2.Under the Audio tab, select “Full processing mode” without adding other options.

3.Under the Video tab, select “Compression–Xvid Codec”

4.Under File, select “Save as avi” and select the location to save the converted file.

Note: don’t forget to try our video converters that will convert your videos in different format to high quality Xvid or H.264 videos with guaranteed synchronization of video and audio.

Ripping a TV show DVD is not as simple as ripping a movie DVD, since TV show DVDs have multiple episodes and are often improperly authored, either purposely or due to incompetence. DVD converters may convert the episodes into lots of segments and you have to cut and join them to get a correct file.

Then if you want to convert an improperly authored TV show DVD into a single file in AVI which is one of the most popular video format, how to make it easier yet for free? Following is the solution. For converting each episode to an individual AVI file, please refer to this article.

Use DVD Shrink to Re-author the DVD.

1. Rip the DVD to the hard disk drive first if DVD Shrink cannot decrypt it and then open the VIDEO_TS folder in DVD Shrink.
2. Select Re-author from the top menu
3. Select the episodes you want and drag them to the left panel under the DVD structure.
4. Select Backup on the top menu and select where you want to save the result files.

DVD Shrink Re-author

There is also a detail DVD Shrink Re-author tutorial you can refer to. After the re-authoring, you get the episodes without other extras and can re-number to place the episodes in correct order for encoding and then joining.

Convert the Re-authored DVD files to AVI

Use AutoGK to convert the DVD files to AVI files:

AutoGK

Merge to One AVI file

To join the separate AVI files to one file, we can use VirtualDub. Here is the detail guide on how to do this.

The above method is easy to use but is troublesome with three steps. The easiest method is to convert the DVD to an AVI file directly in one step, by using a commercial DVD ripper which allows you to convert DVD to whatever format and meanwhile lets you choose to merge the converted files into a single one or not. This way can say you much time and what’s more important is you get the video with much better quality.
